My journey to find the best conditioner for damaged hair has taken me many places and involved many different people. I’ve always been the type to be thorough in any pursuit, and that might just be why I needed to find a good conditioner in the first place.

In my search, I realized Olympians, in general, face harsh environments, chlorine in pools and sun damage. Some Olympic athletes can spend a great deal of time in the water. Take for instance…

Stanford students Simone Manuel, 19, and Lia Neal, 21, who are competing in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. This is the first time in history that two Black swimmers have represented the United States in the Olympics at the same time.

Also, those who do triathlons are amazing too. Triathlons are athletic events involving a triple combination of running, swimming, biking. The swimming part is the worst. There’s usually hundreds of competitors in one body of water, with all their sweat, body chemicals, lubricants used to get into their gear, and the bug sprays and what not applied before the race.

The is no doubt – water is torture for their hair.

The running and biking portions don’t help either. All that sweat air drying, baking in the harsh sun. It’s amazing I they have hair left sometimes. Now of course they wear a swim cap, but it’s crazy how often it gets knocked off by the swimmer in front of them kicking like crazy.

I asked my hair stylist what she thought the best conditioner for damaged hair or what conditioner an Olympian might use to get and maintain healthy hair. I liked and trusted her for a while, as her answer was enthusiastic. However, one day while I was sitting waiting for an appointment with her, I noticed that what she referred me to was the most expensive conditioner they sold on their retail shelf by the register.

Now, I’m not going to say that conditioner doesn’t work. In truth, my hair looked and felt better than it did in years, and maybe that conditioner has earned its price point. Yet, I thought maybe I should keep checking around.

I talked to both my primary care physician and my dermatologist for recommendations. My doctor wasn’t really sure, and my dermatologist wanted to prescribe me something. Really? Prescription shampoo? I politely declined. What my stylist recommended to me was working okay and didn’t involve co-pays or health insurance.

Eventually my search turned online. I was reluctant to do so at first, given that there’s so many fake reviews and companies hyping up their own products. Even user reviews sometimes can’t be trusted as real anymore, if they ever could have been. For that matter, how do I know someone has hair like mine?

That last thought was what finally registered with me. Shouldn’t I ask other black women what they use for their damaged hair? I started checking deeper into the triathlon, swimming and black women forums to see if that topic had been broached, and lo and behold it had.

So I jumped in and posed my hair question and asked what suggestions anyone had. Check them out below.

Best Conditioner For Damaged Hair

Talk about a great hair mask that works to repair your damaged hair. One of my favorites is Argan Oil Hair Conditioner. This deep conditioner works itself into your scalp to bring your hair back to life. If you suffer from hair breakage and split ends using this oil product will end those problems. Why does it work so well? It has nourishing ingredients like Moroccan Oil, Vitamin E, Shea Butter, Argan Oil, Vitamin B5, Rosehip Seed Oil, and Ginger Oil.

If you are a swimmer, try Ultra Swim Conditioner. Their formulation helps restore the moisture lost because of chlorine exposure. The moisture enriched formula conditions your hair and leaves it feeling and looking soft and healthy.

Another Olympic swimmer stated, “The key thing is, if you’re swimmer and you’re going to go in the chlorine, you have to wet your hair before you go in, because once you wet it, it does not allow your hair to absorb the chlorine as much because it’s already absorbed moisture.”

To be honest my favorite best conditioner for damaged hair is the Argan Oil Conditioner. It has worked for me. I love it!
